The Full Story Behind The Photo

This was one of the last photos I took of the Craig- one of Amboseli's biggest Icons. He was impressive on every level yet also one of the gentlest of giants. To be in his presence was a privilege

And yet, over five years despite many encounters with him, the images never quite came together. Often, Craig was swallowed by thick bush and when he did step into open ground, the light was often unforgiving, and the frame cluttered with distractions. The moments were powerful, but the photographs fell short of what he deserved.

Still, hope has a way of persisting. On my most recent visit to Amboseli we found him as before, deep in the undergrowth, methodically feeding, but my guide sensed a shift. Craig, he believed, was moving toward a small waterhole not far away. It would take patience. And readiness.

Nearly an hour passed. Then, finally, the moment arrived. Craig emerged, and for the first time everything aligned. After years of waiting, I made the image I had been searching for and one that hopefully acts as an elegy and tribute to this magnificent elephant.

Impressive bull elephant Liaqat was striding across the savannah walking parallel to Kilimanjaro. As he paused, I was able to frame him perfectly with the towering mountain behind him in the soft early morning light. It is a portrait of quiet majesty.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

On this day, bull elephant Liaqat was in musth and fueled by testosterone and determination he was relentlessly covering ground in search of receptive females. However, the females in the herds were not interested. He eventually peeled away from the herds, striding off alone.

We followed him as I could see that there was enormous potential in the scene in front of me if we could get him in the right position. The savannah was bathed early morning light and Liaqat was walking parallel to Kilimanjaro which was visible. As he paused, I was able to frame him perfectly with the towering Kilimanjaro behind him, the light was soft, low, and angled just right. It is a portrait of quiet majesty, both of this impressive bull elephant & Africa’s highest peak in early morning light.

Michael is one of Amboseli’s emerging Super Tuskers captured striding across the Amboseli savannah.

We had spotted him at a distance so got in position ahead of him so that as he came towards us, I was able to get this dramatic low angle image which gives him stature and highlights his magnificent long tusks which sweep towards the ground.

This image speaks to the quiet power of presence, the fragile grandeur of Amboseli’s Tusker elephants, and the resilience of a species that faces an uncertain future. This timeless black-and-white photograph offers a profound, collectible narrative and anchors a space for contemplation and awe.

A shift in perspective allows you to view some of the biggest tuskers on the planet up close and personal from below. My cameras lens is at their feet looking up as their faces fill the frame highlighting the texture of their trunks and massive tusks. Low level wide angle image of Craig as he passed by our vehicle. This is a portrait of bull elephant as he gives himself a dust bath on the lakebed in Amboseli. This is where an elephant uses its trunk to spray dirt over its body which helps keep the skin healthy & help protect from sun damage. I had never seen this before so was particularly excited to capture this dynamic behaviour which helps to make some spectacular images.

Amboseli, 2023

An afternoon with a great tusker is something rare. This opportunity with Palmer wasn’t just capturing his size and scale, but more about his spirit. I was able to get a low, close perspective, and used my wide-angle lens so that his size fills the frame, giving him real presence. However, for me it’s the trunk gesture that makes this image. The soft curl of his trunk, like a quiet greeting, adds warmth and emotion to this portrait. Calm, grounded, and deeply present, Palmer allowed a moment of connection that felt less like observation and more like meeting him on his terms.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

Sometimes in wildlife everything aligns, and this is one of those moments. It’s an image of Michael, a magnificent super tusker, known for his enormous tusks that almost touch the ground. What is even more extraordinary is that he’s only in his early 30’s so just entering his prime years as a bull elephant, which means he will continue to grow both the size of his tusks and in stature.

The fact that this was my first sighting of Michael after several visits to Amboseli made it even more special and serendipitous. I had heard that Michael was in musth so he was frequenting the park in search of receptive females. That would increase my chances of a sighting of him.

We set off at dawn the next morning and drove towards the Ol Okenya swamp area to see if he was amongst the first groups of elephants moving into that area. My guide Eric spotted him almost immediately amongst a family of elephants, who were moving at a pace, clearly agitated by his presence. The matriarch wasn’t interested & other females were not interested.

After a period, he separated from the herd and started grazing, but slowly but surely, he moved in a direction where I could align him with Mount Kilimanjaro and I was able to get an image of two magnificent giants together, emblematic of Amboseli’s iconic wildlife and landscape.

Amboseli, 2024

A family of elephants was moving out of the swamp area & moving towards our vehicle. As they approached the family split into two moving either side of our vehicle. I focused on the elephants to my left. One of the “teenage” elephants came closer to our vehicle than I had anticipated so he was framed tightly, and that coincided with the wind blowing up the dust, turning the sky white. It was over quite quickly, but enough for me to get this atmospheric image.
