The Full Story Behind The Photo

We had spent most of the morning & part of the afternoon with this mother & her COYS (Cubs of the year) which were likely a week or so out of their den. However, just as they were settled the mother got spooked & she & the cubs ran off towards a nearby iceberg. We set off to see if we could spot them & when we got to this iceberg I couldn’t believe my eyes. The mother & cubs were huddled together on top of the iceberg. To witness such intimate moments, such as this one, between the cubs touching noses whilst their mother rests, is something that is a once in a lifetime sighting.

Baffin Island 2024

Baffin Island is one of the most majestic and pristine environments in the world to photograph polar bears, especially in March and April when sea ice is frozen. To get an image of a polar on an iceberg, with three icebergs providing a perfect backdrop was a dream come true.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

Baffin Island is one of the most majestic & pristine environments in the world to see polar bears, especially in March & April when the sea ice has frozen.

However, with temperatures between-30 to -40 it is also one of the most challenging to ensure you keep your hands warm to press the shutter. On this day luck was on our side as this young male polar bear was spotted early morning at the base of this iceberg less than 5 minutes from camp. As we set off on our sleds, he moved onto the iceberg into the best spot possible, as what completes this image is the three icebergs in the background. I was able to move on foot to within 100m to get this shot.

It would be hard to have a more magical polar bear sighting as he sits in this beautiful & vast arctic landscape.

Shooting from a small boat in choppy waters with a heavy lens can be very challenging especially in freezing temperatures, but with patience you can also get some stunning rewards.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

When we got to this scene the bear was on top of the iceberg & was walking across it as we approached on our skidoos. My excitement at seeing this was palpable.

However, before I could get my camera ready the bear had started to climb down from this incredible winter palace of an iceberg. As he moved & then stopped centerstage in front of the iceberg & take a closer look at us, rather than pick up my 600mm lens, I grabbed my 70-200 lens as I thought this would more perfectly capture the scene in front of me. I have journeyed across the Arctic for almost 20 years in an odyssey to see Polar Bears, and this image is another example of why I think Baffin is the best place to see polar bears is the wild.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

This was my third consecutive year camping on the sea ice in Baffin for the simple reason that it is one of the most majestic & pristine environments in the world to photograph polar bears, especially in March & April when the sea ice has frozen. Our spotters went out before breakfast to look for tracks & on this day we were lucky as they this young 4-year-old male bear was spotted on an iceberg close to our camp.

When we got to the scene the bear was walking across the top of the iceberg. It was an incredible sight to behold. However, before we could get our cameras to start shooting the bear had started to climb down from his arctic palace.

Thankfully the bear ascended back up the iceberg again & lay at the edge of it. I waited patiently for the bear to look in our direction & used the 1.6 crop on my Canon R5 to produce a more intimate portrait of a polar bear relaxed and chilling on the iceberg.

I had spent the whole day with this polar bear, who for most of it was resting on the top of an iceberg. As the sun was about to set he descended. As he started to move towards mountains nearby, I got ti the ground to take this low angle image as his breath was illuminated by the sun.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

Our spotters went out before breakfast to look for bear tracks & on this day we were lucky, as this young 4 year-old male bear close was spotted close to an iceberg about 30 minutes from our camp.

When he climbed up the iceberg we got into position & so began a whole day with this bear as we & he occasionally shifted positions.

As sunset was approaching our group moved so that we could try for some backlit images. This piqued the bears attention & he shortly afterwards decided to climb down. As he started to move towards the mountains that hugged the frozen shoreline, I got to the ground to take these low angle images. As the sun was getting lower, his breath was illuminated by sun. It was a wonderful finale to a day with this Arctic wanderer.

Baffin Island 2025

We had spent the whole day with this young four year old male polar bear, who was remarkably relaxed in our presence. As the sun dipped towards the horizon the bear decided to move towards the ice floe. I got low to the ground to get eye level with the bear who was 100 metres away. This is the resulting image of my encounter with the Arctic Wanderer.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

This young four-year-old male polar bear was resting on an iceberg when he was spotted by our Innuit spotters. As we approached by the iceberg by skidoo, the bear calmly walked across the ice, offering an extraordinary photographic opportunity. Remarkably relaxed in our presence, he allowed us to observe and photograph him throughout the day, alternating between sleep and watchful curiosity.

Unlike females, male polar bears do not hibernate. They remain solitary through the Arctic winter, hunting seals and traveling vast distances, sometimes over 3,000 kilometers in a single month. As the sun dipped toward the horizon, and the bear descended from the iceberg I got low to the ground so that I was at eye level with the polar bear 100 metres away. This was the resulting image of my arctic encounter. He then continued his solitary journey across the ice floe.

The Full Story Behind The Photo

This was my first sighting of a polar bear taken in Svalbard nearly 20 years ago, yet I still remember it vividly. The excitement onboard our icebreaker the Vavivlov was palpable, especially as the scene itself was so breathtaking. The polar bear looked tiny as it walked along the shoreline framed by the towering glaciers. I couldn’t have asked for a more epic Arctic vista for my first Polar Bear encounter. I’ve had closer sightings of bears in Svalbard, but this image holds a special place for me as one of my favourite “animal in environment” images and reflects why it is so important to not only protect polar bears but also this pristine Arctic environment.
