After over two hours at Snow Hill, two adults caught my eye, standing slightly apart. They greeted each other with mirrored movements. A chick appeared at their feet, slipping between them and leaning into its father for warmth and protection.
It was then that the scene became more interesting when another smaller chick appeared and stood against the female Emperor. Whilst I was shooting this scene, I thought that the smaller chick must have been its offspring. Both chicks intermittently would raise their heads towards the adults to beg for food, but although the adults would preen the bigger chick there was never any transfer of food.
Chicks at this age, 3-4 months old, are totally reliant on their parents for food and warmth. Equally the parents are some of the most devoted in the animal kingdom going to enormous lengths to ensure their chicks survival.
