Welcome To The Wild Side!
Welcome to the launch of “The Wild Side” where you can view, watch & read all things fascinating with Wildlife & what we can all do to make a difference to ensure the wild animals & spaces are protected for generations to come.
Over the past few months, I have interviewed world-renowned filmmakers, photographers, conservationists & top-class guides that I have built a personal connection with over the last decade. These wildlife experts are people that I admire tremendously for their passion & drive to support & protect wildlife in whatever field they are in or whatever country whether that’s Africa, India, or Alaska.
I look forward to bringing you more interviews in the months to come but in the meantime please take a look & there are plenty of supporting links if you want to take a deeper dive in and learn more about these amazing people & supporting the work they do.
Enjoy & take a journey to The Wild Side with me!

I Love… Wildlife Books
…collecting wildlife photography books & looking at the work of other photographers. They not only satiate my wanderlust, especially true during Covid but also are a huge source of inspiration when I am about to go on a trip. I’ve even had a bookcase built to showcase a select number of books & here’s some of my newest & favourites of my collection.

REMEMBERING LIONS - I’m a great admirer of Margot Raggett & what she has achieved through the “Remembering” book initiative. The latest book “Remembering Wild Dogs” comes out later in the year & I not only look forward to buying a copy but also going to the launch event at RGS on the 11th November.

ON THIS EARTH, THE SHADOW FALLS - Nick Brant is one of my favourite photographers & I never tire looking at the images in this book. I’m lucky to own a couple of his fine art prints & his style & eye in capturing the souls of animals & Africa is something that I aspire to.

ONE LIFE - Federico is not only a gifted photographer but also a gifted storyteller too. This book was funded through Kickstarter & raised so much more than I think even Federico had anticipated. Testament to his many admirers. His first book “Light and Dust” is also wonderful.

THE DAY MAY BREAK - This is the latest book by Nick Brandt & I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. The images are both beautiful & haunting at the same time. The book portrays both people and animals that have been impacted by climate change & the stories behind the images are just as powerful. It moved me very deeply.

EYE OF THE LEOPARD - This book from Beverly & Dereck Joubert beautifully tells the story of Legadema & the connection they forged with her through filming & photography over the first years of her life. Leopards are my favourite big cats to photograph so this book is very special to me.

MOTHER - This book by Marsel Van Oosten has some exquisite photographs captured across Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe & Antartica. I think he is a Master of Composition in what he terms “animal scapes”.

An Interview With Shannon Benson
Shannon is an award winning wildlife photographer & cinematographer & passionate conservationist who I had the pleasure meeting in India a few years ago. Better known under her brand name Shannon Wild she has had a fascinating wildlife journey which we explore in my interview with her. It’s not always been smooth sailing as you will hear, but Shannon has shown plenty of Aussie grit to overcome the challenges that have been thrown her way over the years.
An Interview With Dereck and Beverly Joubert
Beverly & Dereck Joubert are two of my wildlife heroes & have had the pleasure to get to know them & work with them over the last few years. I sat down with them recently over zoom in between their edit for an upcoming series for National Geographic, where they are busy updating & remastering some of their classic films.
An Interview With Shaaz Jung
I think Shaaz is one of the most creative & poetic photographers around at the moment & I am constantly in awe of the images he creates whether from the forests of Kabini or the Serengeti plains. It’s been wonderful to get to know & work him over the last few years, especially on “The Real Black Leopard” project for National Geographic.
An Interview With Federico Veronesi
Federico Veronesi is in my opinion one of the best wildlife photographers specializing in East Africa at the moment. If you are not aware of his work please check out his book “Light and Dust” & his most recent release “One Life” where his storytelling & photographs weave a compelling & stunning narrative.
An Interview With Russell MacLaughlin
Russell MacLaughlin is a world-renowned & in-demand wildlife cinematographer whose recent credits include “Growing Up Animal” for Disney + & “The Year Earth Changed” for Apple +. However, we first In India when he was filming “The Real Black Panther” with his wife Shannon Benson for National Geographic & we became firm friends.
An Interview With Alex Braczkowski
I got to know Alex Braczkowski when he was pitching a film to the Nat Geo Wild team about a project he was working on for National Geographic focused on the unique behavior of a pride of tree climbing lions in QEP, Uganda & the challenges they face. It’s always great to support a first-time filmmaker & his film premiered in 2018 & continues to be aired on Nat Geo Wild & on Disney +
An Interview With Carl Donohue
When I was researching doing my first trip to Alaska in 2014 to photograph Brown Bears one of the companies that I contacted was ‘Expeditions Alaska’ run by Carl Donahue. That was such as success I have now done 5 trips with Carl to photograph not only Brown Bears in Kodiak but also Polar Bears in Kaktovik which can be challenging but the results can be amazing.
