Icelandic horses are remarkable, as one of the oldest & purest breeds in the world. They were brought to Iceland by the Vikings over a 1000 years ago & since then no other horse has been allowed to enter the country. They were revered by the Vikings for their strength in being able to travel long distances and hard work. That reverence seems to have remained with the Icelanders who seem proud to own horses as part of their family.
Not only are they powerful and resilient, but there is great beauty in their markings and colours. as with this horse Isar who we were able to photograph in different locations
Iceland is also a country renowned for its remarkable landscape and none more so than the wintertime when the rugged terrain is covered in snow. I love photographing animals in their natural environment, so I was thrilled when we travelled about an hour to get to this beach location with the stunning mountains of a nearby island forming a backdrop for this image of Isar. However, with the horse never still I had to be patient to be able to position the head of the horse between the peaks of the mountains in the background. Hopefully this shows an animal at one with this stunning environment.
