CURIOUS CUB
Kaktovik, Alaska 2016
Kaktovik is a small Innuit village on the Northern slope of Alaska & during the months of September & October there is an opportunity to photograph polar bears from a small boat on a lagoon close to the village. Shooting from a small boat in choppy waters with a heavy lens can be very challenging especially in freezing temperatures, but with patience you can also get some stunning rewards.
As I was leaning over the bow of the boat I was able to capture this striking monochrome image of a polar bear cub as it came closer to check out our boat. We were lucky that during our time in Kaktovik the landscape was covered in a blanket of snow, helping to enhance the scene in front of my lens.
The bear's soft white fur contrasts with the stark, icy surroundings, creating a powerful visual narrative of survival and grace. The subtle play of light and shadow enhances the scene, drawing attention to the bear's expressive features and the serene yet rugged environment. It is rare to get this close to a polar bear & to be able to capture this intimate portrait was a real thrill during this arctic adventure.
