BIG CAT PHOTOGRAPHY: Lions, Leopards, Tigers & More

Seeing my first leopard and tiger in the wild is a moment I’ll never forget — and I know I’m not alone. Big Cats have a unique power to fascinate and thrill, whether it’s lions, leopards, cheetahs, tigers, or more recently, the Iberian lynx.

Each species has its own allure., but the leopard remains my favourite. I never fail to be mesmerized by their feline beauty, grace, and mystery. Leopard sightings often feel like a gift; no matter how skilled the safari guide, a leopard reveals itself only when it chooses.

Lions embody power and majesty. A lion’s gaze is unforgettable, but it’s the social bonds within a pride that truly captivate me. These moments are most evident during early mornings and late evenings, and capturing this behaviour has been a key focus of my photography whenver I am in the Mara and most recently, Zambia, and Mokete.

For over a decade, I’ve been on a quest to create a Bengal tiger image that truly reflects their beauty. Working with expert guide Mithun Hunugund, I’ve photographed tigers in exceptional Indian national parks including Kabini, Panna, Pench, and most recently Dudhwa. This collection includes selected Tiger images, with more featured in my blog where I talk more about my Tiger mission.

Closer to home, I’ve focused on the remarkable recovery of the Iberian lynx in Spain. Once close to extinction, conservation efforts by WWF, local farmers, and conservationists in Spain have driven an extraordinary comeback. After limited sightings in 2024, I returned to Spain this year and experienced unforgettable encounters, particularly mothers with kittens. That is something which I plan to build on during future trips in April and July next year.

This Big Cats collection brings together some of my favourite and most recent wildlife images, capturing powerful portraits, intimate behaviour, and animals within the landscapes they call home.

Many of these images are available through the Print Shop, or feel free to contact me directly for more information and just a reminder that a monimum of 10% of all sales goes towards conservation charities including the Great Plains Big Cats Initiative spearheded by two wildlife heroes of mine- Beverly & Dereck Joubert. Check out my interview with them here and if you are looking for a new wildlife photography book for Christmas take a look at Beverly’s latest book “Wild Eye: A Life in Photographs. I look forward to opening it on Christmas morning!
